Science and technology come alive at UW–Madison with an exciting day of hands-on Exploration Stations, intriguing Science Spectaculars, and more to explore at seven Special Venues. All events are free.

Science Spectaculars

  • “Micro Safari”

    Shows from 1–4 p.m. in Tong Auditorium, Engineering Centers Building

  • “Science Is Fun”

    Shows at 1 and 3 p.m. in 1610 Engineering Hall

  • “The Wonders of Physics”

    Shows at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. in 1800 Engineering Hall

  • “Medieval Nanotechnologists”  

    Shows at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. in 1153 Mechanical Engineering.

  • “‘Science in a Box’ Theater from MATC

    Shows at 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30 p.m. in the South Atrium of Mechanical Engineering.

Exploration Stations

Hands-on activities at Exploration Stations spanning the spectrum of sciences. Come explore from 1–4 p.m. in the Engineering Centers Building (40 Stations) and Engineering Hall (8 more Stations)!

Venture from the Engineering Centers Building to tour other campus sites for more to explore! All events are free.

  • Geology Museum icon Geology Museum, Weeks Hall, 1215 West Dayton St.

    Open 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

    Explore the Geology Museum’s exhibits of rocks, minerals and meteorites; walk through a model of a Wisconsin limestone cave and check out the skeletons of a mosasaur, mastodon, saber-toothed cat and the flying reptile Pteranodon.

  • Physics Museum icon Ingersoll Physics Museum, Chamberlin Hall, 1150 University Ave.

    Open noon–4 p.m.

    The L.C. Ingersoll Museum is a public, hands-on museum designed to share the wonders of physics. Exhibits demonstrate basic physical concepts, from mechanics to atomics.

  • Botany Greenhouse icon Botany Greenhouse and Gardens, 1100 University Ave.

    Open 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

  • Primate Center icon Primate Center Learning Lobby, 1220 Capitol Court

    Open 1 p.m.–5 p.m.

    View a family of marmosets and talk with scientists from the Primate Center about the range of research on biology and behavior.

  • <abbr>DC</abbr> Smith iconDC Smith Greenhouse, 465 Babcock Drive.

    Open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Tour the conservatory and check out the dozen greenhouses used for undergraduate classes in plant sciences, soil science, and entomology.

  • Genetics iconGenetics/Biotechnology Center, 425 Henry Mall.

    Open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Come use a microscope to see a variety of stem cells, and learn some of the techniques that researchers use to feed and transfer stem cells growing in test tubes.

  • Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences iconAtmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Building, 1225 West Dayton Street.

    Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Explore Earth and its atmosphere displayed on the Space Science and Engineering Center’s new 3-D interactive weather globe through informal presentations and Q&A sessions. Tours to the roof of the 16-story building will leave on the half hour until 3:30.
